PORTRAIT REVOLUTION

JULIA L. KAY    Book Number: 88432    Product format: Paperback

Artist Julia Kay has built up a huge online community with her international project Portrait Party (JKPP), in which artists round the world make portraits of each other based on their online images and then share their work. This fascinating and attractively produced book draws together some of the most interesting of the 55,000 portraits that have been made over six years. Comparisons of the same subject are particularly revealing when it comes to understanding art and its processes. UK artist Jane Sherwood does a realistic study of Rodrick Dubose in acrylic, jazzed up with a colourful geometric background, whereas the Brazilian Patricia Brasil, also working in acrylic, simplifies Rodrick's face to its basic elements. Portraits of musicians include a pencil study of a saxophonist, a watercolour string trio which includes both subject and artist, and a gorgeous study of a drummer where the patterns of the carpet are reflected in the chrome-sided drums. Oil paint allows time to rework problem areas and achieve subtle gradations of skin tone, while watercolour requires the confidence of fast working and commitment, with the best examples often painted loosely and impressionistically, as in Jennifer Lawson's portrait of Tim with his spiky hair and beard suggesting a dynamic personality. Pastels lend themselves to slow working and rich colour, while digital portraiture can incorporate geometrical effects and blurring. No longer do you have to be the Queen or a sports star to inspire numerous portraits: we can all have our 15 minutes of fame. 224pp, softback, colour reproductions on most pages, list of artists.
