KING OF THE GOLDEN RIVER
Bibliophile price £6.50
Published price £14.95
At Bibliophile we adore well illustrated and collectable children's books and this is no exception with the exquisite coloured artworks of Quentin Blake decorating the text of the classic John Ruskin tale. Ruskin was a 19th century art critic, writer, painter and art collector, and committed supporter of J.M.W. Turner and the Pre-Raphaelite group. This 1851 tale is published here in its original and un-adapted form as written by Ruskin. Chapter One: How the Agricultural System of the Black Brothers was interfered with by south-west wind. In a secluded and mountainous part of Stiria there was, in old time, a valley of the most surprising and luxuriant fertility... It was, therefore, called by the people of the neighbourhood the Golden River. The whole of this little valley belonged to three brothers called Schwartz, Hans, and Gluck. The two elder brothers were very ugly men with half shut eyes so you couldn't see into them and they were very good farmers. They killed everything that did not pay for its eating and shot blackbirds, hedgehogs, poisoned crickets for eating the crumbs in the kitchen. They worked their servants without any wages and kept their corn until it was very dear, then sell it for twice its value. They had heaps of gold lying about on their floors but had never given so much as a penny or a crust in charity and they never went to Mass. The youngest brother, Gluck, was completely opposed, in both appearance and character, to his seniors as could possibly imagined or desired. He was not above 12 years old, fair, blue-eyed, and kind in temper to every living thing. 64 very large pages, colour illus. and gold blocking to the cover.
