LISA SIMPSON'S GUIDE TO GEEK CHIC

Book number: 92086 Product format: Hardback Author: INSIGHT EDITIONS

In stock

Bibliophile price £3.00
Published price $24.99

Springfield's most outspoken and overlooked middle child Lisa Simpson declares that the Geeks have inherited the earth. What does it matter that you don't run with the popular crowd or aren't part of a clique? Your tech savvy drives all social media. You're the smartest person in the room, and it's time to fulfil your dork destiny! Join little yellow haired Lisa from the popular Simpsons cartoon and TV show by creator Matt Groening and celebrate your inner geekdom - maths, playing in a band, going to the theatre, computer, gamer or sci-fi geek. There are quizzes, a field guide which opens out as a little book, accessories, emergency box, discovering your jazz name using the nickname generator - first name starts with this letter, middle name starts with the second word as you spin the dial - Smoky Queen etc. A Geek's Guide to Yoga sees the Thinker preparing the mind for work ahead and the Downward Dog becomes the Isosceles Triangle and the Headstand becomes the Brain Rush which keeps the good ideas coming; the Full Moon is of course Bart pulling down his pants! Gatefold pages explain the history since Eve, 21st century technology with wedgie-proof underwear, and Lisa tries out new styles like superhero and goth girl, artist and tree hugger. Her bookshelf is brilliant. Her tasty treats like apple pi and cow chilli are hilarious, and see the doll named Malibu Stacy sold in tiny folding pamphlets for all her different looks (like Barbie) - alternative comix collector, PhD, feminist Stacy etc. A nerdy girl's guide to boys, comic strips galore and a real letter from the desk of Lisa Simpson inserted in a wallet near the back page and finally Action Vegetarian swapping cards inserted inside the back cover. A companion to 92073 Grampa Simpson's Guide to Aging. Colour illus.

Bibliophile price £3.25
Published price £7.99

Spot the odd one out from rows of six seemingly identical items in a full page grid of seven lines deep equalling 42, but at least one has a subtle difference for you to spot. The fun pictures begin with rows of spiny cacti and we learn that the sap makes a yeasty booze, rows of Negroni, the hipster cocktail, two cool doggies stand out from the pack from the rows of greyhounds which we learn can reach speeds of 72km an hour and spot the odd pair of avocados, a word derived from the Aztec for testicle! Botanical beards, plucky pigeons, muscle men, chilled-out sloths, cool cats and even cooler tropical pineapples complete with sunglasses are among the 44 puzzles each with one to three oddities to spot. Could also serve as a little colouring book! Complete with silly little facts, all great fun. Illustrated paperback.

ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES: SELECTED STORIES

Book number: 23958 Product format: Paperback Author: HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was born in Odense, the son of a shoemaker. His early life was wretched, but he was adopted by a patron and became a short-story writer, novelist and playwright, though he remains best known for his magical fairy tales, which were published between 1835 and 1872. For 150 years his stories have been delighting both adults and children. Packed with light-hearted whimsy combined with mature wisdom they are as entrancing as ever. Here over 40 of Andersen's 168 tales, and among the favourites are The Red Shoes, The Mermaid, The Real Princess, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Tinder-Box and, of course, The Ugly Duckling. Illus. throughout. 400pp. Paperback.

LITTLE BOOK OF CORGI CHARM

Book number: 92378 Product format: Hardback Author: TREVOR DAVIES

In stock

Bibliophile price £2.25
Published price £7.99

Positive maxims and words of cheer from the world's smiliest dog, one will be very amused! When you're troubled and feeling down with nowhere to turn, the infectious happiness of the corgi and his little bundles of doggy joy (which the late Her Majesty the Queen filled her palace with) are packed within 50 glorious colour photos. Surprise Your Partner: 'Following a disastrous experiment with Cubism, Bernard entered his blue period' - mature corgi pictured on sky blue fluffy rug in front of blue floral wallpaper. Never Give Up: 'Riley was winning this battle in the eternal struggle of winter vs short dogs' as Riley skips merrily all four paws outstretched across a field of thick snow. Inside a cone of shame used to stop dogs licking wounds, with closed eyes and tongue hanging out, the corgi says 'Plug me into the TV and let's see what we pick up!' Pictured on skateboards, beaches, carrying a wedding ring, wearing pink sunglasses or riding goggles outside a café, jumping over a fence or standing against logs or at the feet of Santa's elf, life can be a walk in the park if you follow the corgi philosophy - love, laugh and generally lap up life. 80pp, colour.

PHYSICAL TRAINING SIMPLIFIED

Book number: 92477 Product format: Hardback Author: EDWARD WARMAN

In stock

Bibliophile price £4.00
Published price £7.99

A British Library reprint of a physical fitness manual from the Edwardian Age which is both refreshingly practical and amusingly eccentric. 'The exercises herewith given are so arranged as to meet the needs of the young, the middle-aged, and the aged of both sexes. One is never too old to reap some benefit. The system is complete in itself as it brings into healthful action every joint and every muscle of the body, and all this without the use of apparatus. It will give strength, health and confidence.' Beginning with how to stand, the correct carriage of the body and how to retain it: 'Carry your heart high is metaphorical; but to carry your stomach high is practical.' Stand against the wall, first touching the heels, then as much of the body as possible, drawing back the head to the wall, with the chin slightly drawn in. You will observe that the chest is expanded and in a firm position muscularly, thereby enabling you to retain the chest position independently of the breath.' How to walk, sit, rest, sleeping at will, self-magnetising, active chest, breathing through the diaphragm and abdomen, costal, dorsal and belt breathing, the shoulder brace, and the freedom of the joints of the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck with very careful twists and gentle turns and a word about muscles, thighs, and elasticity of one's step, there are suggestions for gentle exercises using the back of a chair and how many repetitions. Devoted to the sedentary workforce, dynamic good health is the aim, not giant muscles, and much attention is given to the crucial abilities of relaxation, flexibility and good breathing as well as specific instructions for strengthening of the arms, legs, hips and shoulders. 74pp, line art.
