For over 50 years and 573 races, Rainer W. Schlegelmilch has photographed the history Formula 1 racing and created a marvellous work about the King of Motor Sports. With foreword by Bernie Ecclestone and Sebastian Vettel, here are all the heroes of days gone by from F1 - Graham Hill, Joe Siffert, Bruce McLaren, Jack Brabhem and the memorable Jim Clark. The photographer's career began in 1962 at the Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. "The engines gearing up and me in the middle of it all with a friend at my side who'd merely wanted a couple of pictures to have autographed...the intensity and the energy inspired me, but I immediately understood the dangers of racing." Superb photography beginning with that very race in 1962 with Trevor Taylor driving for GB in a Lotus-Climax 25 Sharp Sign 17. There are close-ups of the drivers with their goggles and helmets, sitting astride wide wheels, sucking on an ice lolly, a Ferrari 156 in flames and crashed, the mechanics, the adrenaline - you can almost hear the noise and smell the fumes as the chequered flag goes down. Fantastic close up shots in black and white are then followed by colour shots of the 1965 Monte Carlo with a Honda RA 272 engine steaming, a bright red Ferrari 158 looking like a cylinder, Jackie Stewart driving a BRM P261 and John Surtees a Ferrari 1512. Mr and Mrs Maclaren and Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco are pictured as spectators, as is George Harrison and Pattie Boyd. People, scenery, celebrations, photographers, excited spectators, the engines roar and the photography captures the speed and excitement. There are glamorous women like Nina Rindt and even the bottoms of leather-clad mechanics beneath a Lotus-Cosworth 87, flames and sparks from behind cars whizzing round Silverstone and other famous racetracks. Cars line up on the grid, powerful and colourful, there are blurred Red Bull pitstops and close-ups of drivers like Lewis Hamilton. Small contact sheet type 5x5 = 25 photographs in a grid are on themes like the winners, helmets, portraits, famous fans, big busty girls, 1976-2011 in a giant gatefold double page of cars named and with their drivers and places. Exquisitely produced and beautifully printed heavyweight and never to be republished book. 664pp, 11½" x 11". Colour. Full price.
