HOUDINI AND CONAN DOYLE

CHRISTOPHER SANDFORD    Book Number: 87066    Product format: Hardback

Harry Houdini was the world's foremost magician, a friend of Conan Doyle, but was sceptical of his belief in the supernatural. At the age of 11 he attended 'a series of séances' in a failed attempt to contact his dead half brother Hermann. At the age of 18 he sold his watch to pay for a 'professional psychic reunion' with his recently deceased father. The book is weighted evenly on the two characters. Quite shocking when we hear how Conan Doyle towards the end of his life firmly believed his prophetic spirit guide Pheneas that the end of the world was imminent and preached preparedness to his followers. As strange as it may seem the creator of the ultra-rational detective Sherlock Holmes was a believer in Spiritualism. He came to this belief, that one could communicate with the dead, after his son and younger brother, among a total of 11 family members, were killed in the First World War. Arthur Conan Doyle became an expert in the field and developed an unshakable belief that the gap between life and death could be breached. His friend Harry Houdini, the showman and master of mystery, took every opportunity to use his knowledge of illusion to expose psychics, who he thought were fakes, and was incensed in particular by what he regarded as their exploitation of insecurities and the 'nervous derangement' of grief. This is a sensational history of two popular geniuses which conjures up the early 20th century and the fame, personalities and competing beliefs that pulled the two men apart. They became bitter enemies. 282pp, ten pages of photos including one of Houdini in blonde wig and thick glasses disguised as F. Raud, employer of a network of agents to infiltrate séances. An utterly fascinating exploration of belief and consideration of life, death and the afterlife.
