DAVID HOCKNEY: Normandy Portraits

Published to accompany a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, this collection covers Hockney's Normandy Studio portraits between 2020 and 2022. It illustrates around 40 acrylic on canvas works depicting friends and visitors including his partner JP, pop star sensation Harry Styles in yellow and red striped cardigan and pearl necklace, Lola, Tilly, Albert Clark, Sylvia Weber and Hector the sleeping St Bernard dog, and dozens of self portraits, the last of which he is wearing his bright yellow spectacles, yellow and black checked suit and checked peak cap reclined in an armchair. This image-led book showcases some previously unseen portraits uninterrupted by text allowing us to engage directly with the artworks. It depicts a time when Hockney had returned to painting after using his iPad and these portraits were painted quickly and directly onto canvas without under drawing because as he said 'to do a portrait slowly is a bit of a contradiction'.
