ART OF WINNIE-THE-POOH: How E.H. Shepard Illustrated an Icon

Now We are Six again as we remember so fondly the House at Pooh Corner and the unique collaboration between author A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard the illustrator. The images and text they wove together was in a way utterly original for the time and for Shepard it was a process that he relished, creating artwork for new editions right up until his death in 1976, at the age of 96. This beautifully presented full colour volume presents 150 full colour images including never-before-published sketches, finished artwork, personal family photographs and memorabilia. The drawings for Winnie-The-Pooh are well known across the world but perhaps less well known is how these actually came about. This special book throws new night on the creative processes of these much-loved depictions of the imaginary toys and animals belonging to Christopher Robin. There is an early sketch of an anxious looking Pooh struggling into his duffle coat and full coverage of the early biographical details of Ernest Howard Shepard born in 1879 in St John's Wood to an architect and his wife with artistic and literary connections and becoming a star pupil at the RA School. Alan Alexander Milne was born in 1882 in London where his father ran a boys' preparatory school in Kilburn where H. G. Wells was employed to teach maths and science. He gained a scholarship to Westminster school and studied mathematics in Cambridge in 1900 becoming Editor of the Cambridge literary magazine Granta in 1902 with connections to Punch and other national periodicals. Thus Shepard and Milne were contemporaries in age, born in the same part of London, from similar backgrounds, each the youngest of three siblings with a particular talent that was identified and nurtured. The books they created have appeared in millions of editions and nearly 50 languages and this beautiful keepsake book is perfect for anyone who loves A. A.
