PAOLO VERONESE: A Master and His Workshop

Paolo Veronese is acknowledged as one of the giants of Venetian Renaissance painting. His artistic production was richly varied, extending from imposing altarpieces to smaller religious paintings for private clients, from grand portraits to sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition. His 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt' set in a vibrant tropical jungle, the Holy Family is accompanied by angels, one of whom hangs down from a palm tree to gather dates, while others attend to the refugees and their donkey. Extravagantly folded and layered garments, iridescent wings, lend the altarpiece a magnificent surface pattern. This excellent book reveals countless sombre imitations of Christ's Passion. Veronese (1528-88) was praised by the 17th century connoisseur Marco Boschini as a master of invention. The calculated meanings of his works have generally been neglected in praise for their visual appeal. This excellent exhibition catalogue from Scala Publishers (2012) features famous works from American collections including the National Gallery of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum, and Bibliophile has deliberately imported this book to fill a gap in our Art book collection. Veronese was also an outstanding draughtsman, and his graphic oeuvre ranged from preliminary sketches to highly finished chiaroscuro sheets. A foreigner in Venice, he created paintings for Venetian clients and settings, as well for the mainland and export abroad.
