In the 1700s, Scotch Ale was a thick, sweet brew flavoured with groot. By the 1830s it was a pale, lightly hopped beer which became a worldwide success and remains a popular style in Belgium, although it has progressively been diluted through the 20th century. From the time of the Picts to the present day, Scotland has played an important role in the development of British brewing.
