BOOK OF THE HORSE: Horses In Art

BOOK OF THE HORSE: Horses In Art

ANGUS HYLAND & C. ROBERTS    Book Number: 92387    Product format: Paperback

Dame Elizabeth Frink's Lying Down Horse is a beautifully observed pencil and watercolour study for a bronze sculpture that portrays the horse at its most vulnerable - alone and lying down. A passion for horses continues through these beautiful masterworks reproduced in full page and colour in this quality softback, a companion to The Book of the Cat code 92386. The detail from Christian Hook's Azul Dul Sur 2015 shows every brushstroke and dappled colour as a fine chestnut horse is galloped across a stunning Mediterranean beach seascape. Modern art features together with more Victorian high art like Frank Dicksee's The Two Crowns of 1900 in a Pre-Raphaelite style with a golden armoured king astride a beautiful white plumed and decorated horse. John Collier?s Lady Godiva of 1898 shows the first woman recorded in the Domesday Book famously riding naked through the streets of Coventry in protest against huge tax increases imposed by her husband on the town. It is Pre-Raphaelite in its realism, beauty and romanticism. Joe Coffey in two images one from 2013 and another from 2007 captures the muscles in detail on the face of two geldings and again with a mare and its new-born calf suckling in a double page spread entitled Epoch on pages 42-43. There is artwork from Arthur Rackham, Helen Durant, Edgar Degas with his racing and meadow scene, Toulouse Lautrec, the illusion created by the famous Surrealist Magritte in The Blank Signature of 1965 with a lady rider trotting through a forest; the painting invites our brains to join in the dots and trick us into seeing something that isn't there. There are quotes like 'To see a horse is to see an angel on earth' and Gary Cooper's line 'In Westerns you are permitted to kiss your horse but never your girl.' Dapples, dotted, manes woven or flowing free, 'A stubborn horse walks behind you, an impatient horse walks in front of you, but a noble companion walks beside you.' 160 pages of colour artworks, softback.
