MARY CHURCHILL'S WAR:

MARY CHURCHILL'S WAR:

EDITED BY EMMA SOAMES    Book Number: 91786    Product format: Paperback

Winston Churchill's daughter Mary was aged 16 when war was declared, and her fascinating diaries have been edited by her own daughter Emma. During the war Mary met world leaders such as Roosevelt and de Gaulle, sometimes standing in for her mother Clementine, and also joined the ATS, where she not only served in anti-aircraft batteries but also pursued an active social life. In 1940, on becoming Prime Minister, Churchill delivered his "We shall fight on the beaches" speech, although Mary noted "We all have a ghastly premonition that the French are going to give in." In spite of everything, Christmas was one of the happiest ever with the whole family present. 1941 is dominated by Mary's short-lived engagement to Viscount Duncannon, with Lord Beaverbrook being called in to talk her out of it. On 8 March she was in London on the evening of the tragic bombing of the Café de Paris. 1942 is a low point, with Mary highly critical of her brother Randolph and his wife Pamela, though she reserves her most scathing remarks for the Labour MP Aneurin Bevin when she attends the debate at the opening of the House of Commons. After a year of army life Mary is beginning to doubt the strong religious certainties of her earlier years. Full of self-doubt, she describes herself as "cross, dictatorial, tough, noisy, fat and much more". 1944 sees her supporting her father and mother in the tense run-up to D-Day, and at the 1945 Potsdam conference she acted as her father's aide-de-camp. After VE Day her battery returned to Europe where she visited Belsen but recorded only "A memorable day". Finally in July she was by Churchill's side as he faced the devastating rejection of a landslide Labour victory. 384pp, paperback, photos.
