WHEN THE IRISH INVADED CANADA:

WHEN THE IRISH INVADED CANADA:

CHRISTOPHER KLEIN    Book Number: 91412    Product format: Hardback

The Irish "invasions" of Canada, known collectively as the Fenian Raids, began in 1866, and remain one of the least well-known and unusual events in Irish-American history. In the mid-19th century around a million Irish fled the Great Famine across the Atlantic and within a decade many men found themselves "fighting for their country" on both sides in the Civil War. A year after Robert E. Lee surrendered in 1866 a band of Union and Confederate Irish dusted off their guns. These men, who had always considered themselves "Irish first, American second" forgot their recent enmities to fight side by side in one of the most bizarre, fanatical and fantastical military missions ever - to seize control of the British province of Canada and hold it hostage until Irish independence was secured. With the tacit support of the US government, the Fenian Brotherhood, as they would become known, carried out five raids on Canada, planned prison breaks, stockpiled weapons, assassinated enemies, established a state in exile and actually managed to seize a sizeable chunk of Canada, if only for three days. A motley group which included a one-armed war hero, an English spy, a radical who staged his own funeral to escape justice and many proud but ill-equipped Irish patriots, infighting was inevitable and their quixotic quest against insurmountable odds was always doomed, but the Brotherhood showed what fierce patriotism and a never-say-die attitude could achieve - who knows what may have happened if the US had helped more? Lively, inspiring and often undeniably comic, Klein's story of this almost forgotten episode in Irish-American history is well-told, packed with colourful characters who stride out from the page and would be a top work of fiction, if it were not all true! 365pp, b/w illus, apologies for small remainder mark.
