Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) was born to Charles Louis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. in New York City, and studied under the American landscape artist George Inness. He began working in glass houses in Brooklyn and by 1882 was asked to redesign several rooms in the White House. He formed his own company later called the Tiffany Glass Furnaces and famously began to manufacture the glass known as favrile. This later referred to all the glass, enamel and pottery that the company produced. In 1895 they began to commercially produce its famous lamps and exhibited at the Paris Exposition Internationale and earned a gold medal and the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1900. In the early 1900s his Studios expanded its line to gift items like cigar and jewellery boxes, picture frames, clocks and dishes. This exquisite colour gallery showcases some 200 colourful pieces like the Daffodil, Nasturtium and Azalea lamps, a Mosaic Clock, a Peony Apple Blossom Lamp and Shade, Mosaic Floral Base with Cobweb Shade, Iris and Fish Stained Glass, Dragonfly Hanging Lamp, Sculptured Bronze Peacock Hanging Lamp and of course the famous Dragonfly lamps, leaded tea screens, mosaics and centrepieces, chandeliers, geometric pendant lights and with scrolling panels and geometric banding a rectangular Venetian Box from 1915 and a tear-drop shaped opal with small sapphire Orientalist necklace from 1909 and of course the opalescent favrile glassware, vases and enamelled trays. 256pp. Colour.
