TRANSPORT GALLERY: A Journey Across the Canvas

TRANSPORT GALLERY: A Journey Across the Canvas

ERIC BOTTOMLEY    Book Number: 90362    Product format: Hardback

Transport artist Eric Bottomley specialises in nostalgic scenes reconstructed from old photos and drawings. The railway paintings in this book mainly depict the last 20 years of steam in Britain, but they also include a study of the Trans-Siberian Express and a painting of the streamlined LMS Duchess Pacific Coronation, which was shipped to America in 1939 for the New York World Fair. An Edwardian scene shows Aberystwyth station in 1910 where the 2-4-0T loco Rheidol, formerly the Talybont, prepares for a journey to Devil's Bridge. Still in Wales, a grimy LWR Mogul hauls a passenger train up a gradient with Cader Idris looming in the background. The Royal Scot standing in Crewe station, fronted by a Coronation class locomotive in original green livery, is a magnificent study in oils. Southern Railway's Malvern from the Schools Class is seen racing with the Tonbridge-Hastings train through a misty autumn sunset, and at the other end of the country a BR tank engine leaves Glasgow Partick West shortly before Beeching's closure in 1964. Dartmoor, one of the Southern Region's west country Bulleid Pacifics, is pictured coasting into Okehampton station on a wet day, while ex-GWR Castle Class Farleigh Castle waits with the evening express at Worcester Shrub Hill. A gleaming red Stanier Princess is seen steaming through Stockport Edgeley Junction, though the author comments "not the condition I ever remember seeing them in!". Close to the author's home in Wimborne Minster a versatile BR 9F, sadly scrapped almost as soon as they were built in the sixties, idles at Corfe Mullen Halt. The book concludes with some non-rail paintings, including a beautiful study of sailing boats docked at Hotwells in the 1890s with Clifton Suspension Bridge in the background. 28 x 22cm 172pp, around 100 colour reproductions.
