THIS IS THE ONE: Sir Alex Ferguson

DANIEL TAYLOR    Book Number: 90154    Product format: Paperback

When this book was first published in 2007 it was hailed as an all-time Manchester Utd classic and featured in The Times all-time top 50 sports books. We have here the 2011 updated and revised paperback edition which features some extra input from the players and staff. Let?s face it, Sir Alex is an amazing manager, but perhaps the essence of what makes him so special is what Taylor has distilled here into two pivotal seasons. The 2005-6 season, the Annus Horribilis, saw Fergie at one of the lowest ebbs of his 25 year reign ? a failing team, explosive public fallouts with Roy Keane and Ruud van Nistelrooy, a disenchanted fan base and, following a 3-0 beating at Stamford Bridge in April, having to put a brave face on his arch rival Jose Mourinho retaining the Premiership. A lesser man may well have walked. Not he. Cue the Annus Mirabilis. Ditching van Nistelrooy and patching up the fractious relationship between Ronaldo and Rooney during the summer, he re-ignited the pride of the players and staff and the wavering fans to demonstrate just why he is the greatest, deposing an even stronger Chelsea team as champions and eventually seeing off Mourinho. He would later refer to this as his greatest achievement of his management of England?s biggest club. Daniel Taylor has covered United for the Guardian since 1998 and had access to the club like no other journalist at the time. This warts-and-all (plus plenty of fruity language, Govan wit and hairdryer treatment) account of those two helter-skelter seasons of excruciating lows and exhilarating lows show the many sides to Ferguson, from hairdryer to big softy, the most successful manager in the business. 343pp.
