DAVID BAILEY: LOOK

DAVID BAILEY: LOOK

JACKIE HIGGINS    Book Number: 89940    Product format: Hardback

Celebrated photographer David Bailey's controversial reputation often precedes him and over the past five decades he has been a filmmaker, curator, magazine owner, environmental campaigner, painter and sculptor as well as a photographer of fashion to portraiture, nudes to erotica, documentary and reportage. These photographs speak for themselves and here is a rewarding re-examination of his work and best known iconic portraits of artists, musicians and actors of the 60s and 70s including Andy Warhol, the Rolling Stones and Catherine Deneuve. His shot of Jean Shrimpton in 1962 marked the start of his experiments with techniques to 'loosen things up' using geometrical positioning of limbs, hair in flight, blurred to lend a sense of movement and with a tight crop to the image. There is off-kilter imagery like the portrait of Pauline Boty 1964 with her face very close to the lens and Mick Jagger in the same year, given a flawless skin softened by his fur-edged hood or the indifferent looking John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Cecil Beaton and Rudolph Nureyev; Michael Caine in suit and tie and unlit cigarette and abstract and an intimate picture of Brigitte Bardot; the Kray twins photographed in colour with their pet snakes, Man Ray with his thick dark eyebrows raised in challenge and naked Jane Birkin cast as a sublime and seductive woman, Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski both naked and his third wife Marie Helvin, naked and challenging the viewer with her eyes. One extraordinary photograph is Paloma Bailey's birth in 1985, the nurse unblocking the newborn?s nose for her to take her first breath. Covered in blood and mucus she seems alien. Full page colour and black and white photos with captions opposite, glossy pages, life chronology. A quality Phaidon art publication.
