MY MIDSUMMER MORNING: Rediscovering A Life of Adventure
Bibliophile price: £6.50
A Financial Times Summer Book of 2019 based on Laurie Lee's 'As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning' which inspired Alastair Humphreys nearly a century later. The book had made Alastair fall in love with Spain, the landscapes and the spirit, and with Laurie's style of travel. He travelled slow, lived simply, slept on hill tops, relished spontaneity, and loved conversations with the different people he met along the hot and dusty road. For 15 years Alastair dreamed of retracing his footsteps, but never got past the hurdle of being distinctly unmusical. One year he decided to go away, risking failure and humiliation but finding humility, redemption and triumph and a very good adventure. Seasoned adventurer Alastair Humphreys pushes himself to his very limits, busking his way across Spain with a violin he could barely play following in the footsteps of the young Englishman Laurie Lee in 1935 who had never even left the quiet village he grew up in. His idea was to walk through the country earning money for food by playing his violin in bars and plazas. Romantic and inspiring when Humphreys is writing his journal or describing mornings waking up on top of hills, he interweaves personal memories with his walking across beautiful Spanish countryside. 'Two rivers, the Eresma and the Clamores, hugged the town close and cinched it into position...Segovia's Gothic cathedral and Alcázar, the fortress, dominated the skyline... Like the bow of a ship. One side was in shadow and the other honey-lit by low sunshine.' 258 sun drenched pages, line art and coloured photographs of his adventure on the endpapers.
