MOBY-DICK: A Pop-Up Book

MOBY-DICK: A Pop-Up Book

HERMAN MELVILLE    Book Number: 89694    Product format: Hardback

Quite superb paper engineering by Gérard Lo Monaco and lino cut illustrations literally lift forward in 3D on every righthand page of Melville's abridged classic Moby-Dick or The Whale. The story raises to epic proportions the story of a whaling mission over the course of which Captain Ahab of the Pequod obtains from his crew the promise to hunt and kill the white whale that mutilated him during an earlier hunt and which he has made into the symbol of all evil in the universe. By turns violent, poetic and comic, there is plenty of the supernatural element in this exposition of the cetacean science. The ten images that comprise the book are the most expert paper cutting, a kind of delicious magic of a private theatre. Irregularities and use of antique typography add to the superb design. Dark blue, mauve and black are used in layers for the images of this watery part of literature. Excerpts from the original text and story notes by Melville scholar Philippe Jaworski guide the way as we follow Ishmael and the Queequeg up to the gripping final moments in their quest for the whale Moby-Dick. Colour. First edition, 24 pages, 19.4 x 29.5cm.
