LINES FROM NATURE

LINES FROM NATURE

JOHN BUSBY    Book Number: 89338    Product format: Hardback

A member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, behind John Busby's deceptively simple marks are decades of experience of the most observant naturalist, and the very finest of artists. Lose yourself and marvel at the gift he has for colour harmony and compositions that sing like many of the birds he depicts. We meet Penelope, a tame barn owl resting on top of the fridge. A sketchbook of vixen and cubs, field vole and young rabbit, a ring-tailed lemur and spectacled monkeys at Edinburgh Zoo, boxing hares and roe deer, Bonelli's eagle from a falconer's bird, this secretive bird was tracked down in Extremadura in Spain and Eleonora as found on the sea cliffs in Mallorca. For each there are preparatory drawings in charcoal, often showing in stages his observations which may be followed by a keen artist today learning to capture birds in flight. Some of the more abstract colour plates include variations on a rock pool and lines in the sand made by periwinkles, a heron at the blue estuary in a composition of blue, green and grey almost stripes and close observation of nesting gannets, a brightly coloured male Palestine sun bird and a beautiful female merlin, sadly found dead in Orkney. The close encounters take us along magnificent shore lines, to tigers in India, the Kimberley Coast, an Alpine scene, following birds, and mammals and even a visit to a nature reserve in Israel. 2016 first edition, hundreds of colour illus, 192pp, 10" x 12¼".
