JOANNA LUMLEY    Book Number: 89157    Product format: Paperback

Lumley's absolutely fabulous collection of personal photographs tell the story of her whole roller coaster life in showbusiness. Starting as a fashion model, Lumley was desperate to be an actor, but the Catch-22 was that you couldn't get an Equity card without stage experience. Finally she managed to launch her career with one line as a robot in Some Girls Do, quickly followed by a role as a Bond girl in the George Lazenby On Her Majesty's Secret Service, also starring Telly Savalas and Diana Rigg. Joanna's son Jamie was born in 1967, though she never married his father. A brief marriage to Jeremy Lloyd, creator of 'Allo 'Allo, was eventually followed by Joanna's long-standing marriage with opera conductor Stephen Barlow. On screen, Joanna received a proposal from Ken Barlow in Coronation Street, but to her regret the script required her to turn him down. One of the best photos from the sixties dates from Joanna's time playing Brian Rix farces, picturing Rix, Lumley and Leslie Phillips, all apparently naked, being surprised in bed by an intruder. Joanna's big break came with The New Avengers. The role immortalised by Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg was available, and Joanna, who was skint, knew she just had to have it. Her persistence paid off and she became a new sex symbol as the high-kicking, karate-chopping female lead Purdey. More recently, there's been Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders. Joanna was relaxed enough to buy her own Spitting Image puppet, and in recent years has been associated with high-profile charities such as the Gurkha veterans. 272pp, softback, photos on almost every page.
