POSTCARD FROM THE PAST: A Collection of the Funniest

POSTCARD FROM THE PAST: A Collection of the Funniest

COMPILED BY TOM JACKSON    Book Number: 89071    Product format: Paperback

Adoringly written, come rain or shine, a postcard offers our fondest (and sometimes funniest) memories to our loved ones. The author has amassed his weirdest, most moving and amusing postcards from his archive, transforming his scribbled stream of consciousness into glimmering insights into places and experiences. These postcards are relics of the author's two week-long holidays during the Sixties and early Seventies where he and his sister would spend a week with their paternal grandparents in Brighton and a week with their parents at a hotel in Spain, Portugal or Menorca. Read about an escapade to Wilton Bridge, Ross-on-Wye which is captioned 'if it doesn't stop raining soon, I shall have webbed feet', a lyrical observation at Register House, Edinburgh where 'the weather is perfect, the sky like forget-me-nots', and the simple proclamation 'here is another postcard of a polecat'. There are snapshots of bawdy nights at New Quay via a colourful collection of beach photos accompanied by the cheery line, 'On Monday night I ended up on stage at the King's Hall. Dicky Briggs and I were doing the Can Can.' A postcard of London's Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament and Piccadilly Circus is summarised by the conclusion, 'a crab bit my toes.' The postcards show stunning landscapes, from the head of Buttermere, sunset at Land's End and Holy Loch with Polaris Depot Ship and submarine, to seaside resorts such as Bridlington, Teignmouth, Hastings and St Leonards. This is a pithy and imaginative collection which will make the reader chuckle at the combination of a stunning view of Lion Rock at Broadhaven, Pembrokeshire with the line, 'the best part was when mum got stuck in the toilet' and ponder the mystery behind the postcard of St Mawes, Cornwall which is captioned 'have ended up in Cornwall instead of Ibiza - it's a long story.' Paperback, colour and black and white photos, 168pp.
