I WAS A SPY!

I WAS A SPY!

MARTHE MCKENNA    Book Number: 89064    Product format: Hardback

First published in 1932, this memoir of a resistance fighter has a preface by Winston Churchill, who finished the book at 4am, unable to put it down. Marthe Cnockaert's first experience of the war was in 1914 when her father burst in to announce that the Germans had invaded Belgium. Their village of Westroosebeke was soon full of refugees, and Marthe found herself defending her father against the accusation of being a sniper because their old farmhouse had loopholes in the walls. The Germans burnt it down with Marthe's father inside, but he managed to escape. They were taken prisoner and Marthe witnessed people being bayonetted, but following her release she became a military nurse, treating both German and Allied soldiers in the railway junction town of Roulers. Soon she was recruited to the Resistance, picking up and passing on messages via Canteen Ma who was at the centre of communications. At first Marthe was distressed to realise that passing on the movements of ammunition trains would result in many deaths, but German atrocities gave her courage. When the Kaiser was about the visit Roulers, she pumped the German colonel for information, but found herself unable to escape until a British spy intervened in the nick of time. Marthe finally gave herself away by a disastrous slip and was court-martialled, but the sentence of death was commuted at the eleventh hour because she had won the Iron Cross for her medical work. 267pp, black and white photos.
