LONDON BOMBED, BLITZED AND BLOWN UP

LONDON BOMBED, BLITZED AND BLOWN UP

IAN JONES    Book Number: 88405    Product format: Hardback

Sub-titled 'The British Capital Under Attack Since 1867' the author had made a career in bomb disposal as a Major in the British Army. London, like many cities, has witnessed the pain and terror of innocent victims under flame, dynamite, infernal machines, anarchists, but also the Zeppelin raid, the First World War bomber raids, the second IRA campaign, the Blitz, fire bombs, V1s and V2s dropping the threat of Armageddon and nuclear war, car bombs and cutting wires, the long war on terrorism, extortion, racism, and a rocket propelled grenade, here is the handiwork of those dying to kill. A victim of a V1 explosion at Battersea in 1944, Joe Carter, wrote 'My teeth had been practically blown out in the explosion and the inside of my mouth was full of pieces of skin.' Gill Hicks, a victim of the bombing of the Piccadilly Line on 7th July 2005 wrote 'Then suddenly you could hear distant screaming. I thought people were screaming at me? Both my feet were almost surgically severed. From the knee down I was just looking at bone.' From the first Irish Republican bomb in 1867, London and its population have been under almost constant assault and terrorism has featured in virtually every decade from then on. This masterful account includes many archive images, some of commemorative plaques to the ordinary people who died saving the lives of others and who might otherwise have been forgotten like PC Edward George Greenoff. 503pp, illus.
