NATIONAL GALLERY LONDON

UTA HASEKAMP    Book Number: 88147    Product format: Hardback

The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square in London has been showing paintings owned by the British nation since 1824. Among the focal points of the collection are paintings from the late Middle Ages, the Italian Renaissance, and the Dutch Baroque, which, like British painting from the 18th and 19th centuries, are represented with top works in one of the world's most important galleries. Exquisitely reproduced in one of the hundreds of colour illustrations are such masterworks as Turner's Sun Rising through Vapour (a busy boat scene in a tranquil bay), The Rokeby Venus, Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Starting with the Middle Ages are exquisitely illuminated religious paintings of the Virgin and Child, scenes from the Bible, gold plated diptychs, saints and men and women. The chapter on the Renaissance includes masterworks by Lucas Cranach, Dürer and Hans Holbein the Younger. Extending over two pages of this large volume is Caravaggio's realistic, haunting paintings which had a great influence on Baroque painting including Salome Receives the Head of John the Baptist and Belshazzar's Feast by Rembrandt. There are many examples from William Hogarth from Le Mariage a la Mode and a beautiful series of paintings by Gainsborough of his daughters, one chasing a butterfly. There are lovers and watermills, Madame de Pompadour, cherubic children, a sporting contest, marriages and banquets, Paris by night, its gardens by day, trains and great ships from Turner, nobility and the Duke of Wellington by Goya. The finale is Cézanne's Bathers in beautiful blue and Surprised! by Rousseau with the tiger caught in a tropical storm. 276 pages. 26.9 x 31cm or 11" x 12½". Superb colour illus. Multi language edition, new from Könemann.
