CLARE A. P. WILLSDON    Book Number: 87771    Product format: Paperback

Writing in 1900 from her chateau in Picardy, the Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt suggested that a gardening enthusiast from her native North America 'might get some ideas from French gardens. They do know about gardening over here.' She herself later cultivated a fine rose garden and medicinal and herb gardens as well as vegetable beds, and orchards were cultivated in French monasteries and recorded in illuminated manuscripts. This glorious volume explores some of the key characteristics of gardens as an Impressionist artistic theme and traces a number of the ideas and events which combined to make gardens such a significant feature of the art of Pissarro, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Bazille, Caillebotte, Guillaumin, Bonnard, Vuillard, Berthe Morisot amongst many others. A Professor of Art History at the University of Glasgow, Willsdon looks at various aspects including flowers, horticulture, private gardens, the social garden, the working garden, Monet in the south and at Giverny, the Tuileries and at the spread of Impressionist garden painting outside France to Britain, Germany, North America and Japan. Period photographs, engravings from journals, cartoons as well as paintings and drawings, there are 261 illustrations, 135 in colour from thumbnails to full page. Dappled sunlight through trees onto a café with children playing on the grass in the sun, roses and lilies and beautiful terraces and gardens, ponds and lilies, bridges and cottages, a laundress and a wide-eyed toddler, nudes, chickens, society figures, ordinary people in Victorian dress and the impressive series of three views from a balcony of the Louvre which Monet completed in the early summer of 1867.
