The Romans introduced canals to the British islands as early as AD120, the late 1700s a network of man-made arteries linked major rivers and sea ports to land-locked industrialised cities and towns across the country. After the Second World War it was realised that much of Britain's social and industrial heritage was disappearing. 1946 saw the founding of the Inland Waterways Association who initially set about reopening parts of the system. Now there are more than 4,000 miles navigable waterways with many more earmarked for restoration. The Canal Boats magazine of 64 pages describes this history. The second component in our box set is a 60 minute DVD entitled Working on the Canals. Colour film footage of these brightly painted boats and marvels of engineering.
