17TH CENTURY CHINESE PAINTINGS

17TH CENTURY CHINESE PAINTINGS

EDITED BY STEPHEN LITTLE    Book Number: 87393    Product format: Hardback

The more than 130 Late Ming and Early Qing dynasty paintings acquired by Jung Ying Tsao (1923-2011) over five decades constitute a collection representing nearly every major school and almost all of the most important Chinese painters of 17th century Chinese landscape painting. Presented in this volume which accompanied a major exhibition of the Tsao Family Collection, these hanging scrolls, handscrolls, albums and fan paintings are remarkable for their quality, range and depth. The book features 15 works by Dong Qichang, the most protean Chinese painter of the last 500 years, paintings by such masters as Gong Xian, Hongren, Zhu Da, Shitao, Wang Hui and Wang Yuanqi. There are also extremely rare works by lesser known artists, scholars, officials and Buddhist monks, all lavishly illustrated and accompanied by exquisite details. Towers flooded by moonlight, tranquil trees, bamboo and rock, divine calligraphy, winter landscape, poems, orchids, boats, tall mountains, many captured in ink on silk from the 1680s, a beautiful bird on a pine branch and exquisitely coloured flowers in purples and pinks, the lotus flower in fragrant rain and gold flowers on a kingfisher banner - 'Enjoy this and forget your misfortunes' the artist's seals read. The expert text is by scholars from Washington, Stanford and other US museums and universities and they look at a number of themes including the function of landscape in Chinese culture, political uses of painting, the relationship of painting to poetry, the flourishing of Buddhist and Daoist studies among literati and orthodoxy in painting of the era. Authoritative interpretations plus Chinese poems and prose text inscribed on the paintings and calligraphic works, sumptuously reproduced on this huge and heavyweight volume. Hundreds of illus, colour. 10" x 12", 668pp, a rare import, bound to increase in value.
