ART NOUVEAU

ART NOUVEAU

JEAN LAHOR    Book Number: 87316    Product format: Hardback

It has been many years since Bibliophile has handled an exquisite art book on the popular topic of Art Nouveau, so we are delighted to have imported this special new publication. It covers the origins of Art Nouveau, the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris, and the major artists of what was an exciting new decorative art movement. American silversmiths Graham and Augustus Tiffany applied new ornament to their workshops and revolutionised the art of stained glass and with Louis Comfort Tiffany's new favrile glass making. Emile Gallé sent to exhibitions furniture of his own design and decoration as well as coloured glass vases in which he obtained brilliant effects through firing. Clément Massier, Albert Dammouse and Auguste Delaherce exhibited flambé stoneware in new forms and colours. Henri Vever, Boucheron and Lucien Falize exhibited silver and jewellery that showed new refinement including everyday silverware decorated with embossed kitchen herbs. The primary objective of the movement was the creation of a new aesthetic of nature through a return to the study of natural subjects. Artists such as Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Antoni Gaudí, Jan Toorop and William Morris favoured innovation in technique and novelty of forms. Showcased in 200 pages in stunning colour on glossy white paper are the finest examples such as René Lalique's iris bracelet, sycamore comb, marquetry and glass vitrine by Gallé, beautiful Tiffany blown favrile glassware, its famous peacock lamp, dressing tables and wall seats, night tables and exquisitely carved and decorated beds, desks, cabinets and glass and metal entrance halls, the Vienna Secession building and house interiors like the Van Eetvelde House in Brussels, friezes details from Toulouse Lautrec and Klimt, poster art in glorious swirling colour by Grasset and stunning engravings from Beardsley, aquatints and glass panels, woven wool, tapestry, oils on canvas, colour lithographs, a decorated hand mirror, mahogany chair. Here is truly an exquisite gallery of the finest in design and opulence. Over 200 colour illus, 9¼" x 11¼". New, keenly priced.
