When the Waverley route between Edinburgh and Carlisle finally closed in 1969, no-one envisaged that it would ever be reclaimed, so a number of structures, including bridges, were demolished and the track removed. In 1999, however, a feasibility study recommended that the route could be revived, cutting road use by as much as 60,000 trips per year. Renamed the Borders Railway, in 2012 the project was handed over to Network Rail, who were responsible not only for rebuilding the railway but also for developing and renewing the roads along the route. Major engineering challenges were a new viaduct across the Hardengreen roundabout and a detour round the Millerhall Yard. It turned out that many of the original 200 bridges could be refurbished, including the Redbridge Viaduct over the River Tweed, a tribute to the Victorian craftsmen who installed them 165 years ago. A photo of the trackbed on the Esk viaduct shows its excellent condition, but the cutting at Tynehead was flooded and needed serious restoration. The overgrown platforms at Heriot could easily be cleared and strengthened, but threading the railway through the Plumtree Brae area north of Galashiels was an engineering challenge. Track laying was officially completed in February 2015, the first complete journey took place on 7 June, and the Queen opened the line on 9 September.
