ISLAMIC ART IN DETAIL

SHEILA CANBY    Book Number: 87228    Product format: Hardback

Embracing the natural and supernatural worlds, feasting, hunting, war, music and power, the author, a Keeper at the British Museum, examines Islamic art with close-up reproductions and helps the reader to understand its style, technique and iconographic programme. Although animals and human forms are absent from religious artefacts, they appear in abundance in objects made for secular and domestic use. Early and medieval representations of human figures are stock figures which cannot be considered portraits, but Timurid princes of the 15th century began to commission likenesses of themselves for frontispieces of books. A richly coloured 17th century Mughal watercolour of Emperor Jahangir displays recognisable portraits of royals and court officials, while a famous depiction of Shah Abbas by Indian artist Bishn Das deliberately uses perspective and brushwork to make him look insignificant. "The Funeral of Iskandar", Alexander the Great, a Persian national hero, is an anachronistic Muslim funeral with 17th century mourners. Animal paintings include some wild and wonderful dragons, and a popular subject from the legend of Rustam shows his horse Rakhsh attacking a lion while he sleeps. A beautiful collection of big cats is depicted by Miskin, an animal painter at the court of Akbar. In the first section of the book the author explains Islamic ornamentation, including the calligraphy which is integral to many designs, the geometrical motifs deriving from later antique and Byzantine art, and the arabesque, a scroll with repeating leaf and floral elements, also with classical origins. 144pp, glossary, bibliography, gorgeous colour reproductions on every page. 8½" square.
