MOUNT FUJI: ICON OF JAPAN

MOUNT FUJI: ICON OF JAPAN

H. BYRON EARHART    Book Number: 87214    Product format: Hardback

Mount Fuji's iconic status received an international boost in the 17th and 18th centuries through the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, "pictures of the floating world", first in paintings and then in superb woodblock prints by the two great masters Hokusai and Hiroshige, both of whom published ground-breaking collections entitled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The image was also popularised by prolific artists like Minsetsu whose genius was to create numerous realistic and identifiable views. As the price of fame, Fuji has also been subjected to considerable indignity in the decorative arts. Fuji made the transition from prints to photographic reproduction with no loss of iconic power, and every pioneering western photographer in Japan accepted the challenge, culminating in such works as the impressive 14-foot high montage for Chicago's Trade Fair in 1938 which spectacularly incorporated numerous clichés about life in Japan. The earliest extant image of Fuji is from 1069, showing Prince Shotoku, one of the most revered figures in Japanese history, flying over the mountain, possibly in imitation of the Buddha. The author takes us through the representation of Fuji in different historical styles, including the Fuji Mandala of the medieval Muromachi period and the monochrome tradition of Chinese Sung painting. In the modern era the Three Realms theory (Japan, China, India) gave way to a more unified cosmology, followed by the 19th century shogunate and the 20th century use of Fuji as a symbol of colonialism. A fascinating read. 238pp, colour photos. 16 x 23cm.
