THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS

CHARLES DICKENS    Book Number: 87138    Product format: Hardback

Composed in 1843, Dickens said he "Wept and laughed and wept again" transported by the emotional power of Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from misanthrope to man of goodwill. His subsequent Christmas books The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life and The Haunted Man feature with the author's final texts and the illustrations Dickens himself selected to complement his words. Artists include Richard Doyle, John Leech, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, John Tenniel and Phiz. Etchings and wood engravings, beautifully typeset, with marginalia and cursive script, many illustrations are full page and there are four beautiful full page colour plates including Mr. Fezziwig's Ball and The Last of the Spirits. The five stories were originally published in separate volumes between 1843 and 1848. With bonded leather binding and fine, gold tooling, burgundy cloth, leather Nonesuch logo inset to the cover, this is a beautiful facsimile from the Nonesuch Dickens 24 volume series launched in 1937 which employs modern printing technology to replicate the exquisite production and design. The edition was originally limited to 877 copies. Our facsimile reprint has 482pp, 7" x 10" approx. with plastic protective cover and red satin page marker. Leather binding to spine.

A good quality book.

I have three versions now of the Christmas Books by Charles Dickens. And of the three this one is much easier to read due to a larger type face than my other two. The illustrations are more or less the same as my other two volumes, but, interestingly this volume has some of the prints in colour as they originally appeared at the time when they were first published. From now on this is the volume that I will get out when December comes along each year.
