CHEDDAR GORGE: A Book of English Cheeses

CHEDDAR GORGE: A Book of English Cheeses

ILLUS BY ERNEST H. SHEPARD    Book Number: 87137    Product format: Hardback

First published in 1937 and charmingly illustrated by the famous E. H. Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh fame, this charming and classic book is a timeless love letter to English cheeses. It is a treasure trove of wonderful anecdotes including the tale of the monstrous cheese big enough to hold a 13 year old inside, the Stilton that purred like a cat, and the famous cheesemaker in Manchester who selected which Cheddar cheese to sell based on where the mice had been nibbling. Introduced by Sir John Collings (1884-1958), an established talker, drinker and habitué of clubs, his championship of English cheeses reflected a lifelong love of all things rural and traditional but threatened by modern life. The cheeseboard was his battleground in miniature. There are contributions from various writers on the Cheshire, Double Gloucester, Leicester, Wensleydale, Caerphilly, Dunlop, Irish cheeses and Blue Vinny. Out of print since the 1940s, now rediscovered and published 2018 for our amusement and delectation, the book even includes a Cheshire cheese song about a cheesemaker sailing to Spain. Beautiful pen and ink line art, all witty. 205pp.
