EPIC VOYAGES OF MAUD BERRIDGE

EPIC VOYAGES OF MAUD BERRIDGE

SALLY BERRIDGE    Book Number: 87029    Product format: Hardback

Sub-titled 'The Seafaring Diaries of A Victorian Lady' here is life on board a Victorian ship as seen through the eyes of the Captain's wife. Maud Berridge (1845-1907) was the wife of Henry, a Master Mariner, and she travelled with him on at least five occasions in 1869, 1880, 1882, 1883 and 1886, sailing to Melbourne with emigrants and cargo. Most of their voyages were undertaken in the three-masted clipper Superb, which sailed from Gravesend at the start of summer and left Melbourne for home at the end of the year. In 1880, Maud and Henry took their two young sons with them. Later in 1883 they sailed on from Melbourne to Newcastle in New South Wales, then on through the Windward (Society) Islands of French Polynesia in the Southern Pacific Ocean to San Francisco. Here they stayed for two months, exploring the city and surrounds and next they sailed down the West Coast of the Americas, around Cape Horne and on to Queenstown in County Cork. The whole voyage took 14 months. The book tells Maud's story in words from her own diaries of her travels and she is an open-minded and engaging companion. Her resilience, humour and delight in new experiences shine through her writing and her own words are reproduced along with a number of contemporary accounts. The book ends with life after the diaries and her darling Jessie and Harold's lives and careers and her reflections. 256pp, notes on the families and Merchant Navy Service and 16 pages of photos.
