SEA CHARTS OF THE BRITISH ISLES

SEA CHARTS OF THE BRITISH ISLES

JOHN BLAKE    Book Number: 87019    Product format: Paperback

Mapping the 5000 islands that together form Great Britain is no easy matter, especially as the coastline is constantly changing, eroded by the battering of four different seas. Portolans, or charts giving sailing directions, existed before maps and charts as we know them, and a portolan from 1537 pictured here show Scotland as a separate island, an unusual feature that might be of interest to today's Scottish National Party. The new Mercator's projection in 1569 allowed the earth to be accurately represented in two dimensions, revolutionising the future of mapmaking, and the Spanish Armada of 1588 had a collection of reasonably reliable charts to guide them. This beautiful collection of British sea charts starts in Dover and moves round Britain clockwise. Dover itself was one of the Elizabethan Cinque Ports and was re-armed in preparation for World War I, while nowadays it is the main point of departure for mainland Europe. A hydrographic chart of Falmouth from 1781 is remarkable for the professionalism of its navigational information, while a chart of Tenby, one of the principal medieval herring ports of Wales, shows the favourable navigational features that later made it a centre of coal distribution. An 18th century sea-chart of Aberdeen praises its specially fertile soil for parsnips, turnips and carrots. Finally the east coast section includes such fascinating drawings as Scarborough's military defences around 1540 and the complexities of Orford Ness in pre-MOD days. 128pp, paperback, 9½" x 11", bibliography, gorgeous colour reproductions on almost every page.
