PENINSULAR WAR ATLAS: Slipcased

COLONEL NICK LIPSCOMBE    Book Number: 87018    Product format: Hardback

"This sensational, 380 page hardback book is handsomely presented in a slipcase. Overall it is an important and essential book for anyone interested in Napoleonic history." - Toy and Soldier and Model Figure magazine. An updated and revised edition of Osprey's Atlas of the Peninsular War, featuring highly detailed colour mapping and supported by an authoritative text, Colonel Nick Lipscombe was born in 1958 in Angers, France, and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1980. The Peninsular War is one of the defining campaigns of the British Army and sealed its reputation for supreme professionalism, heroic obstinacy and sheer perseverance and made the reputation of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. Under him and Sir John Moore, the British Army ranged across the plains and mountains of Portugal and Spain and into France, taking part in 15 field actions and four bloody sieges including Salamanca, Vitoria and Badajoz. There were a further 25 field actions and 15 sieges in the Iberian Peninsular as part of the savage duel between the French occupiers and native inhabitants. This is a superb non-partisan examination of the conflict drawing heavily on the author's 34 years of service, including postings in both Spain and Portugal, and with contributions from Professor Charles Esdaile and the present Duke of Wellington. Mapping of the period was small-scale and lacking in the sort of topographical detail that enabled commanders to make informed decisions on the practicality of movement and sustainability of terrain for tactical purposes. New cartographic officers embarked on a programme of sketching large parts of the Peninsular but by 1819, funding was withdrawn. With superb chronology of events 1807-1814, legend to map including interpretation of military symbols and the first of the 164 original specially commissioned maps is Junot's Invasion of Portugal and map three, Napoleon's Response to the Spanish Uprising. 390 landscape pages 12" x 10", bottle green clothbound slipcase with gold tooling, satin pagemarker. This is sure to become very collectable and we have the final remaining stock.
