QUEEN VICTORIA'S MATCHMAKING: The Royal Marriages

QUEEN VICTORIA'S MATCHMAKING: The Royal Marriages

DEBORAH CADBURY    Book Number: 86997    Product format: Hardback

"Vain the ambition of kings who seek by trophies and dead things to leave a living name behind and weave but nets to catch the wind." - John Webster, 1623. In the sixth decade of her reign, Queen Victoria's grandchildren numbered over 30. To maintain an increased British royal power, she was determined to manoeuvre them into a series of dynastic marriages with the royal houses of Europe. Fuelled by strong wills and romantic hearts, her matchmaking plans were complicated by the tumultuous international upheavals of revolution and war. Royalty were vulnerable targets. We travel through the glittering and decadent palaces of Europe from London to St. Petersburg weaving in scandals and political machinations and family tensions in a back-biting story of loyalty, courage and sacrifice. The female characters come to the fore and the male characters appear weak and dominated. Particularly spirited are the sisters Ella and Alix of Hesse, daughters of Victoria's daughter Alice who both married into the Russian royal family. May of Teck, the future Queen Mary, played the role of dutiful daughter and bride, passed from one brother to another when her first fiancé Eddy died just weeks before their marriage. Victoria's least favourite grandson Kaiser Wilhelm was apparently perceived by his entire extended family as a deranged warmonger and rabidly anti-British. Czarina Alix was influenced by the toxic Rasputin. The book is structured into chapters which focus on one particular relationship which moves the narrative along. Victoria and Albert's vision of Europe was one of peace secured by a framework of constitutional monarchies. With photos, 382pp.
