SHIPS AND SHIPBUILDERS

SHIPS AND SHIPBUILDERS

FRED M. WALKER    Book Number: 86939    Product format: Hardback

Sub-titled 'Pioneers of Design and Construction' the text is written by the Naval Architect at the National Maritime Museum. Ships have evolved over thousands of years and are the largest and most complex movable structures ever built by mankind. Without them to provide for the safe and efficient transport and recovery of the world's raw materials and products, modern society as we know it could not exist. However in this evolution, the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries saw perhaps the most dramatic and significant changes to the design and construction of ships which became more of a science than an art. It came about at a time of great social and political change. Shipbuilding was essentially a team activity, conducted by professional engineers often in several countries. In the 136 formal biographies included in this book, Fred Walker describes the lives and deeds of the greatest engineers, scientists, philosophers, businessmen, shipwrights, naval architects and inventors. Covering the story chronologically, and going back briefly even to Archimedes, such well known names as Anthony Deane, Peter the Great, James Watt, Robert Fulton, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel share space with lesser known characters like the luckless Frederic Sauvage, a pioneer of screw propulsion who, unable to interest the French Navy in his tests in the early 1830s, was bankrupted and landed in Debtor's Prison. With the inclusion of such names as Ben Lexcen, the Australian yacht designer who developed the controversial winged keel to the 1983 America's Cup challenger, the story is brought right up to date. Arranged chronologically, these individual pioneers and inventors are brought together in one flowing concise linking text and with excellent fact boxes and timelines. Diagrams, photos throughout, 240 glamorous pages published by the Naval Institute Press.
