VISITOR'S GUIDE TO SHAKESPEARE'S LONDON

VISITOR'S GUIDE TO SHAKESPEARE'S LONDON

DAVID THOMAS    Book Number: 86796    Product format: Paperback

In many ways the London of Shakespeare's day was surprisingly like our own - it had inns and taverns, sports and theatre, shopping, gambling and drinking were as popular then as they are now. People probably smoked more than they do now and sugar was a big part of their diet, although our dentists are better at dealing with its effects. Just as today you can see City businessmen discussing important issues in London's many coffee shops and gathering at New Change to hear the latest gossip and buy and sell. The traffic was probably worse than it is now, overwhelmed by carts and carriages. People in the country saw Londoners as soft and not living the authentic life, the eaters of buttered toast. At the same time they loved to read about the dangers of visiting the city. Plague and disease were rife as was bear baiting and cock fighting and execution by hanging, burning or beheading. London exists because of and is defined by the river and welcomed and profited from tourism. Our guides are three local boys ? first the incomparable John Stow whose magnificent Survey of London is the start of all explorations of the capital in the late 16th century. Then there is Fynes Moryson, son of a Lincolnshire gentleman who spent the 1590s exploring Europe and finally Thomas Dekker, entertaining pamphleteer and playwright. A man of trenchant views on almost everything, he is always worth listening to. So we have our guides and let's start exploring the back streets, from how to fight a duel, to tips for ridding yourself of fleas. A really colourful introduction to Elizabethan and the early Jacobean capital. 175pp, large softback.
