1966: From Good Vibrations to World Cup Victory

PAUL FEENEY    Book Number: 86729    Product format: Paperback

It was the year England won football's World Cup and the blonde Bobby Moore was lifted onto the shoulders of his teammates, holding high the gleaming golden trophy having defeated the Germans. '66 was an iconic year in an incredible decade. The Beatles were at the height of their fame, programmes such as Ready, Steady, Go! And Top of the Pops dominated the television screen for all youngsters, there was the tragedy at Aberfan when a giant coal tip suddenly collapsed onto the village's primary school, the vast majority of the adult British population smoked cigarettes and a packet of Players No.6 cost three shillings and sixpence and a Parker 51 pen with a Lustraloy cap was at the top of most secondary school children's wish list. It would cost you four pounds, three shillings and sixpence equivalent today to about £73. 17 year old fashion model Twiggy models a tartan dress; night-time revellers celebrate in the fountains of Trafalgar Square, indoor TV aerials were perched on top of the set and you can read the entire BBC TV schedule for Christmas Day starting at 9.30am with Music presented by Michael Aspel and Judith Chalmers and Leslie Crowther meetings kids in hospital, Billy Smart's Circus following the Queen's Speech and the pantomime Aladdin staring Arthur Askey and Roy Castle, the Ken Dodd Show and the Black and White Minstrel Show and Dr Finley's Casebook at half past ten. Education, daily life, the workplace, the government and domestic policy, fashion and music, TV and radio, cinema and film, the World Cup and other major sporting events are all celebrated. Well illustrated 237 page paperback.

A jog down memory lane
from Anonymous on 09/12/2019
This is one of those books with something for everyone, whatever their memories, hobbies- whether music, sport.......
My husband says that all young people should read this and see what life was really like back in the year of England's famous World Cup Victory.
How those memories came back to life, some fantastic, some tragic, but all so human. A journey through history that touches all the senses.
