GRAFICA DE LES RAMBLAS: The Signs of Barcelona

LOUISE FILI    Book Number: 86702    Product format: Unknown

Throughout this beloved Catalan city by the sea, Barcelona boasts dazzling signage everywhere, glowing mosaics and stained glass, intricately carve stonework and brilliantly gilded placards heralding its eclectic mix of commerce. A love letter to Barcelona, here is a trove of inspiration for those who love books on design and typography and who admire the city of Gaudí and Güell. El Indio on pages 14-17 was an opulent shop for fabrics, opened in 1870, during a time when naming shops for assumed exotic ancestry was in vogue. In 1922 architect Vilaró i Valls gave his lush Modernista imprimatur to this corner façade, with luminous gold-leaf typography listing the shop's various offerings - Lanerias, Sederias, Novedades (woollens, silks, the latest). Known to have been frequented by the Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, the shop also included a larger-than-life automated wooden Indian. Sadly the shop closed in 2014 but is now listed. The Antigua Casa Figueras on pages 12-13 traces its beginnings to a pasta factory in 1842. The shop was designed by architect Manuel Joaquim Raspal who also crafted Casa Texidor on pages 10-11. In 1902 painter Antoni Ros i Güell decorated the shop inside and out with unique mosaic work by an Italian artisan, quite suitable for its current life as a chocolate shop. See the wood trims, leaded glass entrances festooned with orange tree designs, botanical-inspired friezes which are still intact, distinctive lettering in gold leaf and original gas lamps. The book is a travelogue and photographic diary of the most striking and inventive designs for restaurants and hotels, farmacias and patisserias, the workshops of artisanal craftspeople and grand department stores. Documented with affection and dash by a celebrated graphic designer in this Princeton Architectural Press volume. Heavyweight with colour photography, 264pp in landscape, 9¼" x 6½".
