SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER

SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER

TIMOTHY EGAN    Book Number: 86634    Product format: Paperback

Sub-titled 'The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis' this multi-award winning non-fiction Book of the Year is a darn good yarn. Charismatic, handsome and a famous portrait photographer, Edward Curtis moved in rarefied circles, a friend to presidents, Vaudeville stars, leading thinkers. But when he was 32 years old in 1900, he gave it all up to pursue his Great Idea - to capture on film the continent's original inhabitants before the old ways disappeared. He spent the next 30 years documenting the stories, rituals, myths and folklore of more than 80 North American Indian tribes. It took tremendous perseverance, ten years alone to persuade the Hopi to allow him to observe their Snake Dance ceremony and the undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate for their rights. He would amass more than 40,000 photographs and 10,000 audio recordings and is credited with making the first narrative documentary film. In the process he created the most definitive archive of the American Indians. See photographs of masked dancers in a canoe, Curtis with a whale carcass, a wedding party recreating a mythic story of the Kwakiutl, the Great Chief Hidatsa the Eagle Catcher holding one of his prey in 1908 and some of the beautiful women he photographed like Mosa in 1903. His earlier work is represented by a portrait of the titan J. P. Morgan where the light glinting off the armrest was seen by many viewers as a knife. Chapters include Anglos in Indian Country, The Artist and His Audience, The Custer Conundrum and New Art Forms. 370pp, a brilliant biography, many illus. Apologies for remainder mark.
