LONDON'S CANALS

LONDON'S CANALS

DEREK PRATT    Book Number: 86546    Product format: Paperback

Revised and updated colour edition (2004) of the 1977 publication 'Discovering London's Canals', the book begins with a chapter entitled 'London's Other Waterway.' The River Lee Navigation starts at Hertford and takes a southerly route through north and east London to join the Thames at Canning Town. It has two direct links with the Regent's Canal which runs from Limehouse to Paddington. The people who work the narrowboats had a way of life that was totally dependent on the canals, labouring hard, even when the water was frozen and sleeping in tiny cramped cabins behind the cargo, an itinerant community. The canal in London is commemorated by the names of streets and pubs around the city and today the canals are managed and owned by British Waterways and extend to about 60 miles waiting to be explored by visitors. All the walks described in this book are north of the Thames and is for those who want to discover London on foot or by boat. Brunel, Browning, the London Canal Museum, London Zoo, Paddington Basin to Wormwood Scrubs, the index is particularly useful. 56 glossy pages in Shire softback. Illus.
