TEN DRAWINGS BY LEONARDO DA VINCI

TEN DRAWINGS BY LEONARDO DA VINCI

ROYAL COLLECTION PUBLICATIONS    Book Number: 86405    Product format: Paperback

A Diamond Jubilee celebration, this rare exhibition catalogue accompanied an exhibition organised by the Royal Collection in 2012. This selection of drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci, from the incomparable holdings of the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, was seen by over 600,000 people. The archetypal Renaissance Man, Da Vinci was accomplished in painting, sculpture, architecture, music, anatomy, engineering, cartography, geology and botany. His surviving notebooks were not transcribed and published until the late 19th century, and research has allowed his many hundreds of drawings to be properly understood only within the last few decades. They are the richest, most wide-ranging and technically brilliant and most endlessly fascinating of any artist. Only a small proportion are connected directly with his paintings and other works and many of which were never completed such as example number two. Following a short introduction to his life and work, the drawings themselves have been photographed in magnificent close up detail for our study. They include designs for chariots and other weapons, for an equestrian monument, the Head of Leda which is exquisitely beautiful and seductive, Leda Seduced by Jupiter in the Guise of a Swan in a remarkable nude, the bones of the foot, the shoulder and the veins and muscles of the arm, a map of the Pontine marshes in beautiful blue body colour with touches of red chalk over black and white chalk and stylus, and a costume design for a masquerader on horseback are among the examples. Perhaps the most enlightening into his character are the apocalyptic scenes with notes. Outsize softback, unnumbered pages.

A beautiful collection

Any person interested in looking at art or being an artist will revel in these amazing drawings, in order to look at the detail, view the touch of the artist, and possibly attempt similar drawings. Observation reveals the sweep of the pen, metalpoint and chalk and the beauty of the outcome. My favourite amongst a whole set of favourites is the ‘sprigs of oak and dyer’s green weed’.
