TOLL HOUSES OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE

TOLL HOUSES OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE

PATRICK TAYLOR    Book Number: 86392    Product format: Paperback

Having studied architecture, the author went to York University to study for an MA in Conservation Studies in 1992 and encountered the phenomenon of local distinctiveness of toll houses. He looks at Turnpike Trusts and mania, how the road system had reached its greatest extent with over 20,000 miles of road by the 1840s and how the Trusts were compelled to enforce a strictly defined set of toll charges to rectify damage caused by differing types of traffic. To facilitate 24 hour presence of their collectors, the Trust usually built small associated dwellings at their gates - toll houses, either one or two storeyed and in many shapes and sizes, many difficult to date. Today they would be very cramped by modern day standards. Here is the first published study of those houses in the county of Cambridgeshire, small buildings on the highway edge, lived in by the pike-men who collected the tolls. Functional buildings and to some extent expressions of architectural style, coming as they did at the beginning of the industrial revolution, they were usually made of local materials. Often they employed a non-vernacular octagonal ground plan to advertise their special purpose. The book includes a superb gazetteer section from the Isle of Ely, through Huntingdonshire in the west to Old Cambridgeshire in the south. See also milestones and lodges. Each is photographed in this 80 page paperback. A companion to code 86393.
