REGARDING THOMAS ROWLANDSON 1757-1827

MATTHEW PAYNE & JAMES PAYNE    Book Number: 86296    Product format: Hardback

From a pair who have written extensively on Thomas Rowlandson and his circle, Matthew Payne is a Senior Archivist at the London Metropolitan Archives and was formerly in the Manuscripts Section of the Guildhall Library. Here is a 2010 rare first edition published by Hogarth Arts. They tell the gripping story of one of the great graphic satirists and watercolour artists of the British School based upon a mass of new research. Rowlandson kept no diary, wrote few letters, and occurs only infrequently in the memoirs of others. But using church and official records, newspaper reports, contemporary accounts, sales catalogues and consideration of his pictures, the authors shed new light on Rowlandson's family background, education and art training in London and Paris, his personal and professional associations, his travels in Britain and abroad, and the work itself. They look at Study and Place 1772-78, Losses and Gains 1787-91, Army and Navy 1797-1800, Wives and Lovers 1801-1806, Town and Gown 1807-1810 and His Last Years. Called 'Rowly' among his friends or 'Master Roley', his genius was 'prolific'. There are 145 examples in mono throughout, particularly from the Dance of Death plus 32 colour plates of hand-coloured etchings and pen and ink and watercolour over pencil such as the exhibition of Bonaparte's carriage taken at Waterloo and the hilarious mass brawl 'Breaking up of the Blue Stocking Club', Rural Sport and the ruinous Miseries of Human Life but also the beautifully observed Thames at Rotherhithe and Return of the Fleet to Great Yarmouth, 1797, Fish Market at Amsterdam and Parading at Vauxhall among them. Page 237 has one of the very bawdy erotic images, such as Bibliophile published in their volume in 1984. 393pp. First edition.
