RUSSIA OF THE TSARS: History Files

RUSSIA OF THE TSARS: History Files

PETER WALDRON    Book Number: 86263    Product format: Paperback

A set of ten facsimile documents exclusive to the History Files Thames & Hudson series is enclosed in a wallet at the back of this illustrated book. Among them is a map of St. Petersburg in colour, 1718, a Petition to Tsar Nicholas II protesting against the 'Russification' of Finland 1899, a letter from workers demanding better conditions 1905, a propaganda postcard against Empress Alexandra 1917 and the announcement of the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II 1917. Between the 17th century and the 1917 Revolution, the Russian Tsars became absolute rulers of the largest and most diverse empire in the world. The splendour of their court and their capital city St. Petersburg was extraordinary, but the imperial edifice was supported by the toil of millions of serfs tied to the land. This empire of contradictions, so powerful and yet so backward, was to have profound influence on both Europe and Asia. Peter Waldron's lively and clear text explores the vastness of the empire and its extremes of climate, its rulers and peasants, the great flowering of Russian art, literature and music, the pressures for and against reform, and finally the fall of the Tsarist regime in a cataclysm of violence. Inset boxes on specific people, places and events, there are quotations from Russian sources, and 133 illustrations, 89 in colour, paintings and photos and maps. 144pp in large softback plus ten loose leaf facsimile documents on various art papers for removal and study at closer quarters.
