HANS BOLLIGER    Book Number: 86166    Product format: Paperback

Pablo Picasso: painter, sculptor, printmaker, stage designer, poet and playwright, his artistic reputation has long endured the changing landscape of the creative world. From co-founding the Cubist movement including 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and 'Guernica', to his invention of constructed sculpture and co-invention of collage, Picasso created pieces that have taken the art world's breath away. Now, Thames and Hudson's edition of his Vollard Suite, here are 100 etchings created by Picasso between 1930 and 1937, commissioned for and published by the iconic art dealer and critic Ambroise Vollard. With line drawings dedicated to The Minotaur languishing with friendly humans, and the writhing bodies in The Battle of Love, as well as the many figures admiring busts of others in The Sculptor's Studio, this is an extraordinary collection of Picasso's interpretations of human love and the human form. Among the etchings you can spot centaurs, a satyr and bullfights, and the final section includes three stunning portraits of Vollard. The introduction from Hans Bolliger reveals facets of Vollard's life, from his interest in publishing allegedly originating from examining a volume on a bookseller's stand at Quais I where he saw the name 'Ambroise Firmin-Didot, publisher' printed on the title page of a large in-octavo which then inspired him to imagine his own name as such: 'Ambroise Vollard, publisher.' The relationship between artist and publisher is examined in detail, Bolliger wryly writing 'Picasso's portrait of Vollard done in 1910 strikes us as the artist's farewell to the art dealer', before going on to describe their on-going work moving into 1931 when Vollard commissioned the Suite. Extraordinary etchings by one of the most lauded artists. Softback, 8½" x 11", black and white etchings, 102pp.
