HOW TO LIVE IN SPACE: Everything You Need to Know

HOW TO LIVE IN SPACE: Everything You Need to Know

COLIN STUART    Book Number: 86045    Product format: Hardback

Although a shameless publicity stunt, the day when Tesla boss Elon Musk blasted one of his cars into space (complete with a dummy driver and "Space Oddity" playing endlessly on a loop), 6 February 2018, may well go down in history as the day that everything changed. It was the first use of the Falcon Heavy rocket, the first reusable space delivery system, which has cut the cost of getting things out of this world from $20,000/kg to $3,000/kg, a huge saving which will usher in a whole new era of space exploration, even colonisation. Author, journalist, physicist and astronomer Colin Stuart here examines how the human body, one which has evolved over millions of years to survive in an environment with a gravity of 9.81m/s², a nice nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere at a fairly constant pressure, a protective ozone layer, reliable humidity and temperature and a 24 hour day/night cycle, is likely to cope when all these things are suddenly removed. In part one he looks at the training and conditioning the astronauts of the past and those of today go through and the effects that even relatively short stays in the International Space Station have on the body. The space-induced complications of eating and drinking, exercise, avoidance of radiation, sleeping, washing and cleaning, toilet routines, medical emergencies and more are studied in detail in part two. Part three of the book takes a well-informed look into the future of human space travel, enterprises which the author considers are no longer a matter of if, but when - tourist flights, space hotels, space elevators, building a base on the moon, travelling to and setting up a colony on Mars, dealing with dangerous asteroids and even interstellar travel. With colour photos and other illus on every page, this is a superbly produced eye-opening read. 192pp.
