EDGAR ALLAN POE'S PUZZLES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

EDGAR ALLAN POE'S PUZZLES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

JASON WARD    Book Number: 86044    Product format: Hardback

Following an entire lifetime of ill-advised decisions, it was the one made just prior to his bizarre and still unexplained death in October 1849 that did for the reputation of Edgar Allan Poe. In a life spent accruing enemies, he contrived to name the most vitriolic of them, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, general nemesis and one-time love rival, as his literary executor. Griswold wasted no time at all completely trashing Poe's personal and literary reputation and dedicated the final eight years of his life to ruining his legacy. So the perception of Poe as an addled, tormented madman cemented in the public's imagination down the years, and 170 years later, despite creating some of the greatest, strangest, darkest and most influential works of English literature, we still know little about the man himself. So, says Jason Ward, there was much excitement in early 2017, when a trunk was discovered in an attic in Fordham, NY that contained heavily corrected manuscripts in Poe's handwriting. At first it was assumed these were early drafts of his stories, but closer inspection by experts at Cornell University revealed something altogether more astonishing. Poe loved word, maths and logic puzzles and all other types of fiendish enigmas and for seven of his major works - The Masque of the Red Death, The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Cask of Amontillado, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat - he wrote and hid secret alternative versions that deviated from the original text in order to include his much-loved enigmas. A total of 89 puzzles (roughly 13 per book) are reproduced here in all the gothic splendour we would expect - faux aged paper, macabre black or sepia pen and ink illus and plenty of reproductions of Poe's spidery handwriting. Whether the story is true or not is as much of a mystery as EAP himself. The answers are all at the end, if you dare go that far! 224pp.
